This morning, alongside 12 second graders and two moms (who were forced to help) we dissected these owl pellets. If you have a boy between the ages of 5 and 13 you should consider buying the Owl Puke kit here. Not only do you get an awesome, colorful book stuffed full with interesting information that ranks high on the yuck scale, but you also get an owl pellet guaranteed to contain 1-3 skeletons! Our class was able to identify a vole, mole, shew, and a couple of rodents with our stash. We had a few kiddos that tried to stuff the bones in their pockets when they left, but overall, the experience was successful. My boys are super excited about science and dissecting this week and are asking what they can dissect next. FYI- Tony, I have to decline your offer for the hissing cockroaches. There is a limit to my madness :)

Sounds facinating....but I'm glad I didn't have to do it.
Um....yuck!!
Ooooooo! I love dissection! We did cow's eyes in 2nd grade and I loved it so much I volunteered to do it again as a 3rd grader to show the 2nd graders how to do it. I recommend that for your next dissection. My HS classmates thought for sure I would be a mortician or research biologist. Actually, being a parent has equal if not greater gross-out moments!
We did owl pellets in HS biology and it was fun to reconstruct the skeletons- however, they weren't as much fun as the rats (ours was preganant with many babies) or the cat I dissected in a summer vet med course at UW Eau Claire as a teenager.
